The Leading Fertility Clinics: Bourn Hall Clinic
___________________________________ ________________
The Ivfworld.com Success Series explores the factors that make a fertility clinic a genuine winner in the eyes of patients, which are not always those that are most obvious, and looks at the IVF clinics that are leading the way. In today's analysis of the latest Ivfworld.com survey, we take a look at Bourn Hall Clinic based in Cambridge.

Fertility patients are being misled by out-of date statistics released by the fertility authority that have little bearing on what is happening right now and that quote live birth rates for clinics that fail to take into account key variables such as hormone levels. Questionable statistics can give the patient a misleading impression of what really matters and which clinics are genuinely leading the way. Clinics cannot guarantee a patient will go home with a baby, but they can guarantee the way they treat patients during fertility treatment. Given that stress can influence whether or not a patient falls pregnant, the overall experience a patient has at a clinic is a fundamental factor that determines whether a clinic is regarded as successful.
The Ivfworld.com Top Twenty UK Fertility Clinics received high scores in the latest survey because patients said they had a good overall experience at these clinics.

Excerpt from The Bourn Hall Clinic Report Interview: Mike MacNamee, Chief Executive of Bourn Hall, believes that: “The winning formula is to do with the cohesion of the team and as far as patients are concerned it’s treating them individually.” His team of professionals have worked with each other for ten years, so again there is a thread within the success stories of working together for a significant length of time. The clinic has a high staff to patient ratio which can make a difference. “We’ve spent quite a long time deciding on our core values,” said Mr MacNamee, and our goals are showing through. Twenty per cent of patients are fully funded by the NHS and the rest are private.
In terms of age, he said: “I don’t think age should be a barrier to establishing a family, but I understand that NHS funds are finite. Choices have to be made and I have sympathy with those that fall outside their limits.” He adds that in terms of those that fall within the age limits: “ The PCTs we’ve talked to are not providing three cycles but one – paying lip service to a Government dictat. With the PCT waiting list, we try to ensure we treat the older patients first so they don’t miss the deadline and because success rates can decline after forty.”
On the subject of donor eggs, Mr MacNamee, said: “No PCT will fund donor eggs which I think is scandalous.” He concludes: “I think the natural menopause should be the cut off age, treating some up to fifty to fifty-five, although the menopause can strike at anytime from twenty onwards”, so there can be no hard and fast limits here.
