Author Gestone injections versus Crinone Gel

Hi Everyone,

I am on my 2nd IVF cycle. 1st one unsuccessful and I had a lot of trouble with irritation from the cyclogest. Has anyone had Gestone injections or the Crinone Gel. My husband wants me to have the progesterone injections but I thought it would be good to get some of your thoughts on the matter.

Hi there

I used crinone for my first cycle which resulted in my baby boy, I got on ok with it just a bit itchy towards the end of me using it ( I used it for 12 weeks)
I am currently on my 2nd cycle and am using it again ( due to test this Sunday) and am getting along fine with it.
It is generally recommended as it is pessaries which reach the neck of the cervix which is right where it needs to be and will be absorbed nicely. I don't have experience with injection form but just the fact that the crinone is delivered to the place it is needed is quite a selling point.
Good luck with your cycle!
Ps my clinic say that crinone is a lot better than cyclogest, when I commented on 'the lovely crinone' they said 'it's not as bad as that sticky cyclogest we used to use''

LJ,

Thank you. We were worried that we weren't taking up the progesterone with our last cycle. I have to say the shots don't sound very pleasent but it guarantees that you get all the progesterone you need. I had a lot of irration the last time around. The clinic also said that I may have to take two shots instead of one so it might be better to take the gel. I anm so worried that I won't make the right choice.

Hi,
I had 3 unsucessful cycles.. Used the pessaries and then the crione gel. Whilst unlike you I did get irritation from it however, like you (and the reason I thought I'd reply!) something made me feel like they did absolutely nothing! I can't really explain it but I never felt it was absorbed.. Anyway in my last cycle I followed my instinct and wanted a change and there had been a couple of women who had sucess using the gestone injections so I specifically asked for these (the nurses thought I was a bit bonkers and despite it being a 'free' nhs cycle we had to pay for gestone as it was not the standard drug - we would have just been given pessaries) I opted for them - they were literally a bit of a pain in the ass, especially as I was totally needle phobic and hubby had to do it and they cost a fair bit we now have a 5 month old daughter so I consider every 'prick'! And every penny well worth it!! Anyway, just my opinion and don' forget you do have to carry on with them for 12weeks.
All the best. X

Thanks LauraJane and Cosmicgirl,

Both of your replies are really useful and I appreciate the fact that you have taken the time to answer.

We have had the doc see if they can get the gestone and it looks like the injections aren't being made in the 100mg strength. So if we did do the gestone it would have to be 2 50mg shots a day! I don't think my butt can deal with that for 12 weeks.

Everyone seems to think that the Crinone works well. I just want to make sure that I am getting the right dose without any irritation. We are still trying to get the gestone but I definitely want to do the thing that doesn't stress me out the most!
